More details
Do I need a medical questionnaire to join?
OCSTA members who join by Aug. 31, 2025 don’t need to complete a medical questionnaire.
Members who aren’t covered by a group plan and who join after Aug. 31, 2025 must complete a simplified medical questionnaire for extended health and hospital coverage.
No medical is needed if you’re transferring from another group plan or adding secondary coverage.
When does my coverage start?
Applying by Aug. 31, 2025?
You are guaranteed acceptance, and your coverage can start on any date you choose within this guaranteed acceptance period.
Applying after August 31, 2025?
If you are switching from another group plan, your coverage can start on any date after your current coverage ends, as long as it’s within 60 days of that end date.
Applying after August 31 and not covered by a group plan?
- Extended health and hospital coverage will begin once your application is approved, after we’ve reviewed your medical questionnaire.
- Dental coverage starts on the date you choose—no medical review needed with a 24-month commitment.
How long does it take to approve coverage if I need to complete the medical questionnaire?
Approval can take one to several weeks, depending on your situation. If more information is needed, the underwriter will contact you.
How are the premiums billed?
Premiums are billed monthly on the 5th of every month, one month in advance.
Will I be an RTOERO member when I join?
Yes, since you’re part of Canada’s education community, you will become an RTOERO member when you apply for insurance. Learn about the other benefits of membership.
Does my insurance coverage end when I am no longer part of OCSTA?
No, since you are eligible for RTOERO membership anyway, your coverage and RTOERO membership continue when you no longer serve as a trustee.
Who is eligible in my household?
Your spouse or partner doesn’t need to be a member to be eligible for coverage. This includes a spouse through legal marriage or a partner who has lived with you for at least the last 12 months. Coverage is available for:
- Unmarried children under 21 who aren’t employed full-time
- Unmarried children under 30 who are enrolled as a full-time student at a post-secondary institution and who are dependent on you for support
- Children of any age who are disabled
As a member of RTOERO, your immediate family will also have the option to join RTOERO and access the group insurance plan. Learn more about who can join RTOERO.
